Formulating with Fragrances

Stephen Weller

The fragrance industry is strong – it employs 35,000 employees worldwide and makes around $8 billion per year. Around 50% of products are made specifically for cosmetics with the Western European fragrance market by far the largest worldwide, claiming around 37% of the market.

National and regional regulatory requirements are changing fast around the world and especially in Asia it can be difficult to keep track of all the developments. One thing that is constant is the IFRA Standards, which are globally implemented voluntarily by the fragrance industry.

During my fragrance workshop at in-cosmetics Asia I will be explaining in detail what the IFRA Standards are and what cosmetic manufacturers should expect from their fragrance supplier with regards to complying with the IFRA Code of Practice. Compliance to IFRA Standards is required by most finished product manufacturers worldwide and so it is important to understand the process to gain access to export markets.

It’s essential the industry has an association network to represent it and promote the safe use of fragrances. IFRA runs a Code of Practice to help improve fragrance standards. This includes 83 standards prohibiting the use of certain fragrance ingredients,  92 standards which restrict the use of specific ingredients in fragrance compounds and nine raw materials that must meet a special purity criteria.
Although it’s usually the IFRA Secretariat or the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) who leads the development of a new IFRA Standard, triggers can be manifold; such as scientific results or academic publications. We also rely on you, the public, to tell us your concerns about particular ingredients!

If you want to be up to date on the best practices and latest trends in fragrance then this workshop will not disappoint. I look forward to seeing you all there in November.
